EDS electrical design software has been described as the most open electrical design software developed to run in conjunction with AutoCAD. The two main drawing components of EDS, Elecdes and Paneldes provide intelligent design tools for engineers and draftspeople. Additional utilities (Protogen, Ebase, dbedit and batch plotter) are provided with Elecdes and enhance the Elecdes Design Suite functionality. EDS software utilizes the ability to read and write from and to drawing and database files, allowing the user increased flexibility in data modification. It is possible with Elecdes to allow draftsmen to produce drawings rapidly, while engineers may specify data (including tagnames and device ratings) using an external data editor e.g. Access or Excel.;Users in the construction industry use the EDS products for fast production of schematics and loop diagrams plus automated cable routing from their circuit diagrams and plant layouts. Switch Gear manufacturers are using EDS products for efficient production of protection and control circuits, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, wire cutting machine input and materials lists. Typically, the EDS suite of software will pay for itself in 3-6 months, drastically reducing the time requirements from "design to build".
