Database
The
GaBi databases have
a clear and comprehensible structure and can be extended easily by the user.
Metals, plastics, energy carriers, auxiliary substances, transport processes,
chemical intermediates, mineral substances, building materials, parts and
papers, etc. may not be everything, but in comparison with competitors, they
offer a convincingly high coverage off the most important fields and a high
level of data quality – this makes up the difference.
GaBi
4
Professional database includes approx. 650 sets of data (cradle to gate),
generated by IKP/PE. This data is based on information from patent/specialist
literature and industry which makes GaBi 4
to one of the
leading databases in the world. These data sets include the decisive areas
of the pre-chains to metals (steel, aluminium and non-ferrous metals), organic
and non-organic pre-products, synthetics, mineral materials, provision of
energy (steam, thermal energy, electricity mixes and power stations), end of
life and disposal and processing with.
Nevertheless, specific data demand may exist. Your own inquiries are often
time consuming and therewith quite expensive. PE Europe can provide you with
individual customized data on demand, either from our stock or

Environmental Indicators and Impact Data:
GaBi 4 provides several different Impact Methods including Ecoindicator
95, Ecoindicator 99, Ecological Scarcity Method (UBP), CML 1996 and CML 2001.
In total, 63 environmental indicators are included. GaBi 4 further
allows the user to integrate any other existing Impact Method or to create
individual performance indicators easily.
Handling
The enhanced
user-friendly graphic interface ensures that GaBi 4 can be used
intuitively and that it does not take long to learn how to use it.
The
software system has comprehensive functionality with online help and
user's guide as well as a completely interactive html-file documented databases.

GaBi 4
is available in German, English,
Japanese and Danish language versions. Additional language versions are in the
planning stage.
Technical Information
GaBi 4 is
a 32-bit application that was conceived for Windows95TM ,
WindowsNTTM , Windows2000TM and WindowsXPTM
. Using the Windows clipboard, GaBi 4 is able to exchange data with
any other Windows application. Cut and paste plus direct access on external
files like graphics or documents ensure integration into the user’s data
processing environment.
Project conception and documentation
The GaBi
4 software system
makes it possible - with the help of the project manager - to simply and
clearly have a conception of projects, and it makes it easier - by using
integrated DIN ISO 14040 categories - to obtain a quick and expert documentation.
Database and Database-Manager
GaBi 4
offers a clearly arranged database interface:

Database Manager, which works similarly to MS-ExplorerTM
to match most users’ software usage habits.
Furthermore the GaBi database manager includes the GaBi 4-Portal, that is more
then a useful collection of links to sites related to topics regarding
environmental issues (LCA, DfE, IPP, and many more).
Visualisation
Processes are arranged in Sankey diagrams, allowing a quick overview of mass,
energy or even cost flows shown as proportional to quantity. It is up to the
user to determine which additional flow quantities one wishes to depict in this
sophisticated manner.

Diagram Options
The GaBi 4
diagram tool provides clarity with endless arrays
of numbers. A variety of diagram types are available. Any result may be
transferred by cut and paste to other Windows applications to be prepared for
presentations and reports.
Analysis
How do balances change if, for example, transportation distances of intermediate
products are altered? How do different allocation methods affect results? What
about changes in process parameters like efficiency or emission factors? These
tasks can be solved conveniently by varying decisive parameters on the process
plans. Parameterised process models that allow the definition of non-linear
equations are the foundation for parameter
variation and
scenario balances.
The GaBi 4
Analyst facilitates this. Other new analysis features
implemented in GaBi 4
are the Scenario Analysis and the user friendly and
fast Monte-Carlo Analysis.
Data exchange features
GaBi offers you various possibilities to exchange data between
different GaBi systems and also between different applications (e.g. MS Excel)
Data
Exchange via GBX-functionality:
The data exchange by GBX is most accomodating. It is most interesting for
companies with multiple sites and numerous users to exchange database objects in
between different GaBi installations in an efficient manner.
GaBi support fully ecospold import and even export. This export functionality is
a unique feature and makes it easier to use e.g. the Swiss ecoinvent database
within the most powerful software tool available.
The GaBi system
includes an external process recording tool. Together with information from the
"empty" process forms, this tool sends questionnaires to an external location.
An external data processor can enter data into the prepared process shell and
transmit them back. This data can then also be imported to the GaBi system. This
electronical way of data gathering ensures a consistent data collection.
The GaBi 4 software is one of the leading
experts systems for balancing complex and data-intensive process networks.
Parallel analysis of environmental problems in product life cycles
according to DIN ISO 14040 ff. and the optimisation of production sequences
from an economic point of view is ensured thanks to the thoroughly developed
functionality of the GaBi

software package.
