Subpixel Classifier by Applied Analysis Inc.

1.03 - What's this?

IMAGINE Subpixel Classifier developed by Applied Analysis Inc., shatters the inherent limitations of a sensor's spatial resolution and expands the range of useful information that can be derived from multispectral satellite and airborne imagery. It literally 'breaks the pixel barrier' and allows users to harness the power and efficiency of coarse-resolution satellite imagery to identify and classify a selected specific material.

Additional Product Information

IMAGINE Subpixel Classifier;Overview; The IMAGINE Subpixel Classifier developed by Applied Analysis Inc., shatters the inherent limitations of a sensor's spatial resolution and expands the range of useful information that can be derived from multispectral satellite and airborne imagery. It literally 'breaks the pixel barrier' and allows users to harness the power and efficiency of coarse-resolution satellite imagery to identify and classify a selected specific material. ;Because the program is seamlessly integrated into ERDAS IMAGINE, the Subpixel Classifier also has the flexibility to work either as a stand alone process or as an aid to any of IMAGINE's land-cover classifiers when greater discrimination is needed.;Features; The IMAGINE Subpixel Classifier offers higher levels of accuracy and discrimination than land-cover classification tools and is a cost-effective, time-saving solution when you require in-depth analysis and monitoring of a complex problem. It can offer tremendous cost and speed advantages under a variety of conditions, especially over traditional on-the-ground methods. ;The Subpixel Classifier also provides an estimate of how much material is present in each pixel. Another benefit is the program's capability to gather directly useable information about totally inaccessible regions without having to resort to expensive, high-resolution imagery.;Advantages;· Detects materials occupying only a small fraction of a pixel.;· Enhances portability of signatures from one scene to another.;· Significantly improves classification accuracy. ;· Reports the fraction of material present for each pixel classified.;· Offers higher levels of discrimination such as species of trees or type of crop. ;· Maintains consistent classification within and outside the training area.;When to Use;Traditional land-cover classification methods work well for general-type classification. They are fast, easy-to-use, and offer useful, general information. The IMAGINE Subpixel Classifier is an appropriate solution when a remote sensing application requires the identification or classification of a material that is:;· smaller than a sensor's spatial resolution,;· in complex environments that contain more than one material, or ;· an inaccessible area. ;This is especially true when the only other options are intensive exploitation of high-resolution imagery and/or on-the-ground investigation methods.;Examples of Subpixel Classifier Applications;· Forest Management ;The Subpixel Classifier was used to identify specific tree species in complex forest environments. ;· Environmental Protection ;The Subpixel Classifier was used to map locations of fuel spills at a decommissioned airbase so it could be converted to safe, civilian use.;· Agricultural Crop Assessment; The Subpixel Classifier was used to find castor fields in Kansas, Mexico and Brazil with a signature derived from a field in Texas.;· Mapping ;The Subpixel Classifier was used to map the locations of small waterways in jungle areas of South America working with Landsat imagery.;Other product applications include: Geologic Resource Exploration, Insurance/Risk Assessment, Precision Farming, Image Sensor Development, and many more.;Data Types;3 or more spatially registered bands.;· Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM);· SPOT XS;· IKONOS;· Many other airborne and satellite multispectral sensors; The Subpixel Classifier Software Package includes:;· User's Guide with step-by-step tutorials;;· Interactive Demonstration;;· On-line Help.;Other Services;· Training Courses;· Multiple-user Site Licenses ;· Demonstration Package;· On-going Software Support ;· Customized Services ;Supported Platforms; The Subpixel Classifier plug-in module is ERDAS IMAGINE 8.3 compatible and runs on the following Workstations:;· Windows NT, 95, 98;· Sun Solaris 2.5+;· Silicon Graphics IRIX 6.2+;· HP-UX 10.2
