Redactor® 3.1 is a product for Windows® 95/98/NT developed by SYNTHEMA for spelling, grammar and style checking of Italian written texts. Redactor provides the user with an easy to use, professional editing environment, to draw up documents, reports and articles in errorless, clear and fluent Italian. ;Text checking ;Spelling: each word in the document is compared to with the content of a basic Italian dictionary and of one or more specialistic or user provided dictionaries containing the lexicon of the document to be checked.;Syntax: each sentence, phrase and paragraph in the document is checked to verify its grammar and syntactical correctness. Those sentences not conforming to grammar and syntactic rules are highlighted. The relevant Italian grammar is provided with the basic dictionary. Special lexicon grammars, provided on demand with the relevant dictionaries, are also available. ;Fluency: each sentence in the document is checked to highlight those extracts where a given threshold in fluency is not achieved: sentences containing a number of non-trite words exceeding an established threshold, repetition of identical or similar words or forms, duplications, abuse of modal adverbs in "-mente".;Punctuation: notification of the most frequent mistakes, such as: blanks before punctuation marks, misuse (not compulsory) of capital letters, missing brackets or inverted commas, etc.. ;Fluency evaluation: the document can undergo a statistical fluency evaluation; the total number of characters, words and sentences is notified and the average lenght of words and sentences is calculated as is the fluency index.;All the checking tests can be performed either individually or jointly and applied to the entire document during the initialization phase. Checking is also performed interactively as a result of modifications entered and triggered by selected . In addition, Redactor offers a complete set of functions to help users write texts in good Italian. ;Functions ;Alternatives: users can ask for a list of words similar in the spelling to a certain word which is not contained in any of the dictionaries used during the spell check. ;Contrarily to other products providing alternatives based on morpho-phonetical similarity, the adopted algorithm focuses more on typing errors (invertions, omissions and insertions), which, in Italian, are more frequent than mistakes due to incorrect spelling.;Classification: users can ask for the complete classification of a word in the text to easily identify its correct role within a sentence.;Synonyms: users can ask for a list of words synonymous to another and, after choosing the most suitable synonymous (proposed as base form), get the automatic substitution of the replaced word in the same genre/number (mode/tense/person, if it is verb).;On-line explanations: the explanation of the type of error (word not found in any of the dictionaries used, wrong agreement, excessive length of a sentence, repetition, etc.) is available for each notification. ;Addenda: When a word is missed in the set of dictionaries used, the user can add it to a selected dictionary.;Customization: Users can define the parameters used by Redactor in performing the checking tests to customize them according to their needs and the active document requirements.;Dictionaries: users can use one or more dictionaries cuncurrently and, if needed, associate a certain set of dictionaries to a specific document. For instance, the dictionary of computer science and of medecine can be used for all the documents dealing with computer and medical topics. ;Dictionary Editor: this tool helps consult the reference dictionaries to perform all the checking tests which can be applied to the document. In particular, users can add a word, get and modify its classification in terms of attributes, inflection paradigm (declension or conjugation), alterations and synonyms. ;Redactor is based on the Synthema Lexical Engine and Database Management System.;Syntactic Tree Viewer: for any sentence the syntactic tree can be shown providing an easy way to analyse the role of each sub component (type of phrases and, in more detail, predicates, subject, direct or indirect objects, up to each single word) ;At present, the basic dictionary includes about 42,000 lemmas, corresponding to approximately 1,074,000 inflected forms, classified both with its own attributes and with the attributes coming from the originating lemma.;Redactor offers all the features of a text-editor and is able to manage RTF, Microsoft Word®, Write and obviously text documents. ;No additional Word-processor is required.
