Additional Product Information

, DOLLAR UNIVERSE - concepts and functionalities, , DOLLAR, UNIVERSE, cross-platform job scheduler - Unix, NT, VMS, OS400, OS390, GCOS8, Meet the challenges of batch management in distributed open systems..., In a world of heterogeneity, downsizing and client server applications, DOLLAR UNIVERSE, provides automation, security and reliability for open systems based on a highly innovative, approach to batch process management in distributed environments. It is a major contributor to, increased productivity and to the overall quality of production services., ...with DOLLAR UNIVERSE, maximum availability and scalability of your IS, simplify the management of replicated environments, a solution for all your automation needs,  , Cooperative Architecture for maximum availability and scalability, , Robust automation is an absolute necessity for ensuring the high levels of availability required, by enterprises relying heavily on strategic business applications. One of DOLLAR, UNIVERSE's most prominent features is its Cooperative Architecture. Cooperative Architecture, means that each machine is equipped with full automation capability. The advantages of, the cooperative model are clear:non-stop service: Each machine can continue normal local processing even if the, network is unavailable, which is crucial in distributed environments., performance: the Cooperative Architecture spreads the scheduling and launching workload, across all the nodes on the network, thus increasing the reactivity and the performance of, the automation functions. This is all the more important in the case of high volume, operations., In terms of the administration and monitoring of DOLLAR UNIVERSE, the Cooperative, Architecture offers a high degree of flexibility. Thanks to its client-server communications,, administration and supervision functions may be used both locally and/or, remotely: , individual jobs, processing streams and their associated scheduling data may be defined, centrally and distributed to target machines. This is particularly useful when the, configuration requires the same jobs to run in parallel on more than one machine. Of, course, local adaptation of the centrally defined parameters remains possible., alternately, when each machine hosts a different application, job definition and, scheduling may be tested and implemented locally. local operations may be monitored, locally. , however, information concerning the status, of local jobs can be uploaded to the central monitoring node in order to inform the, operator at a single point. The operator will then be able to connect to the local, node, diagnose the problem and take the steps necessary to recover in real time., The versatility of the administration and monitoring modes fully satisfy the requirements of, the most demanding variety of organizational types., , Management Units: why repeat what you need only do once ?, , The Management Unit is the concept at the heart of DOLLAR UNIVERSE which makes it the best-of-breed job scheduler for distributed and replicated environments. The, Management Unit enables operations processes to be built and managed using a logical view of, the environment without direct reference to the physical configuration. This makes all the, more sense in distributed environments where hardware configurations change frequently. , Moreover, processes built in such a way can adapt automatically to changes in the logical or, physical configuration., in distributed environments, objects (calendars, rules, jobs, schedules...) may be common, to multiple environments. DOLLAR UNIVERSE incorporates an object approach which is particularly effective when managing this kind of replicated environment. In this, way N identical environments may be managed as one., with DOLLAR UNIVERSE, objects are attached to Management Units (logical execution, environments) and not to the hardware environment. Management Units are classified by, Type. Once an object is defined, it can be attributed in a single operation to all Management, Units of the same Type, however numerous., the object oriented approach minimizes the number of parameters to be defined, and maintained, shortening the solution's implementation delay in proportion. In, addition, it facilitates organizational and technical change, since objects previously defined, can be reused in a few seconds for new Management Units., Management Units can not only be generically addressed when distributing parameters, across the network (e.g. send procedures and schedules to all Management Units of the type, "Shop"), but enable triggering and synchronization of jobs using generic and, hierarchical addressing (e.g. run the same procedure on all Management Units of the type, "Shop", or on all the "Shops" depending on the Management Unit "Region"). Changes in, the number of shops, their physical attachment to a machine or their organization in, regions will not affect the definition of the operations processes involved. , Organizational changes will be simply reflected in the administration tables, the, operations processes will adapt automatically., , The solution that fits, Job description, DOLLAR UNIVERSE is equipped with the necessary tools for defining all types of, processing streams no matter how complex. The drag & drop option in the intuitive, graphic interface makes job definition child's play., an elementary job is called a Uproc. This is the customer's execution procedure associated, with the definition of its functional constraints (dependencies, incompatibilities,, physical and logical resources...). Uprocs can be scheduled individually., Uprocs may be grouped together in a sequency template called Session. In this way only the, Session header need be scheduled. Uprocs within the Session are submitted according to the, sequence defined, including automatic error processing capabilities. Above all the, Session allows constraints of a more technical nature (e.g. restore data base) to be, expressed over and above the applications logic which is reflected at the Uproc, level., Scheduling, DOLLAR UNIVERSE's algorithms are sufficiently comprehensive to satisfy the most, arduous requirements. Moreover, Uprocs and Sessions can be simulated to allow the, verification of their scheduling algorithms.Calendars represent the daily characteristics (working, closing, holiday day). Multiple, calendars can be defined., rules. A list of common rules is standard issue. It is also possible to create scheduling, rules for special cases (e.g. 8th workday before the end of a 23 day period except for, Tuesdays and Thursdays). The same rule (e.g. every workday) will adjust to the different, calendars., a launch window determines the earliest and latest launch times, day by day. Uprocs and, Sessions may also have multiple launches per day., Implementation & deployment, DOLLAR UNIVERSE offers 4 parallel environments, or Areas, with totally separate data, and services. The 4 Areas enable the progressive tuning of applications processes, throughout their life cycle, starting at the development phase, through integration,, acceptance and finally deployment into the Production Area. Processes can be tested and, easily transferred from one Area into another one without risking the pollution of, production data. The use of parallel Areas tends to diminish the number of errors, frequently endured when applications are deployed., in each Area, DOLLAR UNIVERSE proposes management of objects by version, making it easy to handle change and restoration of objects., Workload balancing, in order to better spread the workload over time and across the configuration, DOLLAR UNIVERSE features a load balancing function built upon batch queue management. This function regulates the number of running jobs and optimizes system, resources. , Operations monitoring, DOLLAR UNIVERSE supplies operators with both a graphic, character and command mode Job Monitor. The Job Monitor aims to give operators a clear view of, the past, present and future, letting them filter displays according to standard (job status,, execution date, job name etc...) and user defined criteria. Several levels of information, facilitate operator access to the data required to diagnose problems before taking steps, to recover.,  , ,
