;The RTF2FO converter was designed for converting Rich Text Format (RTF) files to Extensible Markup Language (XML) format using the Extensible Stylesheet Language Formatting Objects (XSL FO) specification. XML documents are convertible to other well-known formats, such as HTML and PDF, and can be used in a variety of XSL FO processors. Besides having this feature, RTF2FO allows you to create form templates and to provide XSL Transformations (XSLT) for filling in form fields with actual data. The converter can be used as a command line tool and via Java API calls. Simple conversion
;RTF2FO converts an RTF document (for example, MS Word 2000 document saved as Rich Text Format) into XSL FO format. The RTF features supported are:

- Font family and size, superscript; ;
- Font style and weight (bold, italic, underline, etc.); ;
- Paragraph formatting (alignment and margins); ;
- Table formatting (column widths, borders, spas, nested tables); ;
- Page setup options (margins, page size); ;
- Headers and footers; ;
- Pictures; ;
- Footnotes (custom and Arabic numbering labels); ;
- Configurable encoding; ;
- Links (e.g. in a table of contents) and hyperlinks.
Conversion to a templateConversion to the XSL FO template differs from simple conversion in that it allows defining template fields. The resulting XML-files conform to XSL FO specs except for field definitions. To define a template field, the user must insert a special form field into a RTF document. A Word macro provided with RTF2FO simplifies this operation. An XSLT is used to fill the XSL FO template with actual data taken from a supplied XML document.
